In the 1930s, the prevailing mentality was that if a doctor gave a baby a suction cup of sugar, anesthesia was not needed during surgery, whether the surgery was a circumcision or something that would endanger life. We, as a society and as researchers, have come a long way since then, but only recently. In 1985 in Washington D.C., the baby Jeffrey Lawson was born prematurely and needed heart surgery.
