As the process of registering the company is initiated, the organization selects the legal structure that is most appropriate. A sole proprietor, owned by one person requires very little paperwork, if any, to be submitted to the relevant state agencies. However, limited liability companies (LLC) and corporations require more complex business structures. The state often maintains the specific filing as well as paperwork requirements for every company. The types of paperwork include articles of organization, statement of limited partnership or article or incorporation. The paperwork describes the company's nature, rules of the organization and structure of the management- it is filed with the state and the cost vary from state to state.

All companies that get an opportunity to be registered with the state need to be issued with the necessary licenses and permits. To obtain these licenses and permits, the company needs to file certain paperwork to identify and verify the business. They will also need to pay a fee to facilitate the registration. The tax authorities require companies to register with them to obtain the employer identification number. Companies that provide medical or legal advice must be registered with the relevant state boards which govern their practice. Companies that specialize in selling certain products such as firearms or alcohol need to obtain specialty licenses and permits.
