In a perfect world every trucker onĀ  Paleohacks Cookbooksevery route would be able to plan their trip so that they had time to pull over, get out of the truck, and order a sit down meal in a good diner or restaurant every day they are on the road. The problem with this picture is that it isn't a perfect world and more often than not traffic, construction, lines at the dock or problems loading or unloading have just destroyed your plans for that healthy sit down meal.

However, it is also important to realize what many truckers consider a healthy meal to start with already has a lot of problems. Diners and restaurants, especially those associated with truck stops, have learned to cater to drivers that want to get in, eat something that tastes great, and get out quickly. The result is that a lot of truck stop restaurant and truck stop diners really just have fast food restaurant menus.

This means they are basically serving high carbohydrate, high calorie and high fat foods. Typical cooking methods include deep frying, grilling in fat or adding a generous amount of high calorie sauces to even healthy vegetable options. Even salads at some restaurants are high in fats, sugars and carbohydrates, but because they are called a salad they are considered to be a healthy food.

You can find grab and go food ideas at a truck stop, especially the newer chains and franchise types of gas stations, which are very healthy. All you need to do is learn what to look for and what to avoid.

Where to Look Some of the new large styles of truck stops are huge places and they tend to use some devious ways to get you to stop at the short order grill or choose those high calorie, high carb pre-made foods. If you notice these types of foods are always positioned so they are the first thing that you see when you walk in the door.

Generally you will find healthy foods including cut fruit, vegetable trays, cheese and even pre-made salads, but they tend to be on the outside area where the food is sold. It is like the grocery store with the produce and fresh foods in coolers around the outside. In addition look carefully at the labels or the menu and ask for baked, not deep fried, and ask for light or fat free dressings and cheese if you are ordering from the take-out area. Even asking for whole wheat buns for a grilled chicken burger makes a healthy choice from the standard deep fried chicken on white buns. You will also find that the healthiest foods are usually going to be mixed in with some of the more popular food items as well. This is fine; there is nothing wrong with having a treat every now and then, just make sure it isn't every time you go into the truck stop.
