If you have ever purchased software, graphics, or any download-able types of materials online, odds are you were sent a zip file containing your goods. Often times these files will contain.exe files, or may be too large for your email client to accept them. There are many utilities that will both allow you to unzip a file or zip a file. The most common compression utilities are WinZip, WinRar and UltimateZip. Each of these software programs offer a free to use license.

This brief article will give you instructions on how to unzip a file using WinZip.

# After you have downloaded your zip filed, locate it by browsing to the file location.
# Right mouse click on the zipper folder icon and go to extract. You may also double click the file to open the program.
# Highlight the name of the file and click extract option.
# You will select a destination folder to extract to.
# Done, just browse your newly created folder and program files.

There are many reasons you may wish to compress and/or archive data such as you would like to be able to create backups that take up less storage space, or maybe you wish to backup your computer files on the internet, or on a USB key drive to use at another location. You may also wish to just backup and password protect files, send to someone or just to keep the files neat and tidy on your computer, thus you will need to archive it.

If you are using Winzip please follow this process to zip a file.

# Open the Winzip program.
# Click on Winzip Wizard if available, if not click to the interface.
# Select the option to create a new zip file.
# It will now ask you to name the compressed file, be sure to at the end. An example would be ''.
# You will then want to select the destination folder and files you wish to add to the zip file.
# Click on maximum compression.
# Then click OK.
# Done.

Other archive utilities may have slightly different processes to zip or unzip your compressed files. They are very simple to use, and all function in the same way. If you wish to a different software program, be sure that quick zip, archiving, file decompression and even encryption of passwords is included. It should also offer extracting of files as well.

The file extension SIS is used as archives for Symbian OS and they are not application files as mistakenly believed. The long form of SIS is Symbian Installation Source. The Symbian operating systems exist on several mobile devices. So, you can say that SIS is a zipped file used for mobile phones which contains several other compressed files. In case you have some SIS files on your computer, you can open them and unpack. zip extractor
