Herbal medicines aren'tnew — plants are helpful for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. But wellness herbs suppliers usuallyhaven't time-honored the same technical inspection and aren't as severelycontrolled as medications.

Herbal supplements arecontrolled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but not as severelyas prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. They fall below a group calleddietary supplements. Dietary supplement manufacturers don't need FDA approvalto sell their wholesale healthproducts, but they must:

·Confirm that their supplements are free ofpollutants and that they're correctly labeled.

·Avoid making precise medical claims. TheFDA can take action against businesses that make false or unproven claims tosell their supplements.

·Have investigation to support claims thata product speaks a nutrient deficiency or supports health, and contain adisclaimer that the FDA hasn't appraised the claim.
