Google and the other engines treat subdomains like they were entirely different sites (because they are, technically). Matt Cutts even suggested using them as a way of cordoning off some of your thinner content, post Panda.

That said, ask yourself why you are really using the subdomain. Is it making it easier for your audience? Are you doing it for technical reasons, or just because it appears "neater" to you when you see it on the screen.

Every day, hundreds of domain names get dropped from domain registrar lists. Many of those go quietly unclaimed for years.

Instead of trying to brainstorm a new domain name for your site, why not browse thousands of popular domains that have already expired?

The Domain Expiration Process

When someone registers a domain name, they don’t actually “own” that domain. They lease that domain name for a certain amount of time.

This usually ranges anywhere from one to five years.

For any variety of reasons, many people never get around to renewing their domain. When that happens, the domain expiration process follows specific steps.

Mart domains usually wins on price, they’re huge and as such they can make less money off of people who buy domains through them. Go Daddy also offers a huge amount of additional services from hosting to email and the list goes on. If you want service to do it all for you Mart domains is that service.

If there’s a specific domain that you really want, you may be able to purchase it before it goes to auction.

Buying a Domain at an Auction

A less expensive option is to wait for premium domains to enter the redemption (grace) period once they expire. During the grace period, you can “backorder” the domain.

There are a number of websites that list expired domains you can backorder. Typically there is more than one person trying to backorder expired domains. In those cases, it’s likely to enter into an auction.

The easiest option is to look for domains that are past the auction stage and are just sitting out there waiting for you to buy them.

The selection may be more limited, but you can still find some great domains that people have passed up.

Trademark rights arise from actual use in commerce when customers identify a particular name as being the source of goods or services. (Technically, a mark for identifying a source of services is a service mark.)

When people use "trademark" as a transitive verb or say "get a trademark," often they mean "register a trademark" with the US Patent and Trademark Office.

You can register a trademark based on your actual use of a name to offer goods or services, or you can apply for an intent to use trademark registration for a name that you have a bona fide intention of using.

If those names happen to be the same as the domain name for a site selling those goods, then there is a chance the Trademark Examiner assigned to your application may decline to register it. The owner of the domain name may interfere or protest, or the examining attorney may decline to register it based on her own research. The applicant has a chance to submit evidence why the mark should be registered and the public will not be confused.
